Green Therapy involves treatments which do not use medications or surgical methods to treat people with medical, physical or emotional needs. It relies solely on the remedies that nature provides. Examples include “relating to animals”, “exercise”, “music” and “farming”.
Green Therapy Rx traces its roots back to the late 1950s and early 1960s when Stella Bongiovanni and her two daughters, Toni Lynn and Bonnie, ran it as a camp for diabetic children from South Orange, NJ. Its original location is Camp Weahqua Road in Johnsonburg, NJ. Though no one knows for certain, Camp Weahqua Road was named after a Native American chief who had once lived in the area. The camp become unsustainable in the 1960s after which time it was placed into a woodland management program.
Our co-founder, Megan Sardis is the great-granddaughter of Stella Bongiovanni. When Megan was 12 years-old, she tore her ACL. The rehab was grueling, but included light swimming in a pool she shared with autistic children. Their happiness was so infectious it inspired her to volunteer as an instructor. Megan then learned of the “green therapy” history in her family and decided to formalize and expand the tradition.
